surveys, romney won last night's debate and he won big. cnn survey said 67% of viewers gave him the edge after his first meeting. will that translate into more votes on election day? we have more on what we are hearing the campaign trail today. i'm sure this is what ever is talking about. >> reporter: it is. they -- interesting thing. will it impact the election? couple of ways to break it down. one to look at historicly. that's what gollup did, taking a look at the last other years of debates, they found two impacted the election. in 1960 with nixon and kennedy and in 2000 with bush and gore. the other thing, is to look at what happened today when romney saw the story line shift in his direction. the republican nominee couldn't resist another stop in denver. he surprised colorado's action committee by joining his sons on stage and talking of feeling the energy. >> i said the president's vision has trickle down government and i don't think that's what american believes in. i see instead a prosperity that comes through freedom. >> reporter: the president made a denver appearance as well.

mitt romney to task. that did not happen until the last half-hour of the debate. for the better part of the first hour, it was mitt romney who was pn offense, challenging the president's record, addressing him directly, accusing the president of misrepresenting mitt romney. toward the end, we heard mitt romney say, you are entitled to your own house and plain, but not your own facts. there was a fair amount of %+arring back and forth. generally speaking, there demeanor's seemed like, in mitt romney's case, he is prepared to be president, and president obama is struggling with some of the strains of being president with some of a rigid somewhat of a difficult campaign. a difficult campaign. -- with somewhat of a diffi remember when you said men are superior drivers? yeah. yeah. then how'd i get this... democratic nominee, and form massachusetts governor mitt romney, the republican nominee. this debate as the next three, two presidential, one vice presidential are sponsored by the commission on presidential debates. tonight's 90 minutes will be about domestic issues and will follow a format designed by the commission. there will be six roughly 15 minute segments. thousands of people offered suggestions on segment subjects but i made the final selections and for the record they were not submitted for approval to the commission or the candidates. the segments will be three on the economy and one each on health care the role of government, and governing. with an emphasis throughout on differences, specifics, and choices. both candidates will also have two-minute closing statements. the audience here in the hall has promised to remain silent. no cheers applause boos hiss among other noisy distracting things, so we may all concentrate on what the candidates have to say. there is a noise exception right now, though as we welcome president obama and governor romney. republican idea. governor romney at the beginning of this debate said that what we did in massachusetts could be a model for the nation. i agree that the democratic legislators and messages that might have given some advice to republicans in congress about how to cooperate. but the fact of the matter is we used to the same advisers and they say it's the same plan. when governor romney talks about this board, for example, unelected board that we've created, what this is is a group of health care experts, doctors, et cetera, to figure out how can we reduce the cost of care in the system or a brawl? -- in the system overall? because there are two ways of dealing with our health care crisis. one is to simply leave a whole bunch of people uninsured and let them fend for themselves. to let businesses figure out how long they can continue to pay premiums until finally they just give up and their workers are no longer ensured, and that's been the trend line. or alternatively, we can figure out, how do we make the cost of care more effective? and there are ways of doing it. so i cleveland clinic

jobs and the economy this last night's debate. overnight the romney campaign released a new ad talking about, what else, jobs. tracie potts is live in denver bringing us the latest from the campaign trail. good morning. >> reporter: hi, marla, good morning from the university of denver. they talked about it here last night and now he's talking about it this morning on the air waves. mitt romney with his new ad explaining how he expects to create 12 million jobs over four years if he's elected. he says he'll do it through energy independence and tax reform. this was a big topic in the debate last night, not only talking about jobs but they also talked about health care. they talked about medicare as well. romney off to virginia today with paul ryan for his post-debate rally there today and in fact virginiaes one of the states that our polls showed right before this debate where he's starting to close the gap. the president after having another rally here is off to wisconsin where he'll speak to a college crowd, familiar crowd for the president. perhaps a little more comfortable
